There is nothing like the thrill of opportunity online. Being able to identify and take steps toward turning an idea into a thriving business is a key characteristic of nearly all good SEO’s I know – driven by an entrepreneurial spirit of vision, mission, and realization.

Ultimate success, I think, is in the act of aspiring to achieve your business dreams, regardless of the outcome. By being courageously willing to dedicate time, effort and passion, we open the door to success. If not now, then at a later date when our new learning’s demonstrate their true value.

While doing my due diligence of keeping a close eye on the most opportunistic bunch of SEO’s I know, domain developers, a few domain gems caught my eye that may be of enormous value to you, dear reader.

Without further ado, the list of domains that I think represent a worthwhile investment are:

PR 6 domains for sale

http://www.lornet.org/

http://www.habitatjam.com/

http://www.jamahiriyanews.com/

http://lib.scuta.org/

http://www.saltlake2002.com/

PR 5 domains for sale

www.pimientolinux.com/peru2ms/

www.danriver.com/

www.shirinebadi.ir/

These domains are all for sale at SEDO.com. I am not affiliated in any way with the sale of these domains, or the sellers themselves.

What in the world would you do to utilize these domains?

1.) Use for link trades

2.) Develop with Adsense

3.) Turn into directories

4.) 301 to another of your domains

May opportunity knock your door down!

Additionally, here is a link to a text file with domains that are ready to drop (becoming publicly available) in October, 2010.

Happy domaining.

January update : to the webmaster community, please refrain from using the words ‘domaining’ or ‘fun’ in your post titles as it attracts significant comment spam, a burden you deserve not to deal with.

A very quick blog post here because I am just flat out… inspired by this blog post at SEOmoz.

Did you know that only the first anchor text found on a page, per the order in the HTML, is credited by search engines? If you linked to your home page three times from one blog comment, each with different anchor text, everything except the anchor text of the link that appeared first would be effectively ignored.

To overcome this problem and to provide an improved user experience, a savvy linkbuilder can implement an internal anchor link using the HTML name attribute (I’ll call it a “named anchor link” from now), and then link build to both the home page and this new named anchor link.

A named anchor is just a reference link to a particular part of a page. If you’ve ever noticed a link that said “go to top of page”, then you’ve seen a named anchor link. For more info on named anchor links I recommend W3 Schools, but if you’re ready to get started now we can be done in practically no time at all.

Let’s start with a hypothetical example

We’re going to pretend that you are the CEO of a company called “Race Car Guru’s”, and on your homepage you have a section about race car driving lessons and a section about race car rental. You’d like to link build for the search terms “race car driving lessons” and “race car rental”, so you locate a leading “dofollow” industry blog and begin writing a detailed comment. In this comment, you plan to link to your home page for each term, and would like to get credit for the anchor text in both links to benefit your search engine rankings for these keywords.

To receive the anchor text value of both links, a small amount of HTML needs to be added to the section of your home page first, creating a named anchor link.

Because you talk about “Race car rental” on your home page, you locate your header tag for “Race car rental”, which looks something like this:

<h2>Race car rental</h2>

Now that we’ve found it, we simply make a small addition to the HTML on the home page:

<h2><a name=”racecarrental”>Race car rental</a></h2>.

You’ve just created a named anchor link that when clicked, takes visitors straight to the Race car rental section of your page.

Now, we can link build as follows:

1.) With a normal home page link for anchor text “race car driving lessons”

<a href= “http://www.example.com/” title=”Race car driving lessons at Race Car Gurus” >race car driving lessons</a>

2.) With a second home page link to the named anchor link #racecarrental, anchor text “race car rental”

<a href=”http://www.example.com/#racecarrental” title= “Race car rental from Race Car Gurus” >race car rental</a>

You will now be credited for the anchor text of each link in the comment, doubling your link building efficiency.

I believe that link building to internal anchors, such as http://www.example.com/#something will naturally become more common as an increasing number of websites implement dynamic web technologies such as AJAX/JavaScript to change content in-browser without fully refreshing the page. As a result, I believe that search engines may adapt by beginning to index some URL content after the hash tag (#) in order to provide a better user experience. An example of when it would be plausible for a search engine to index parts of a URL occurring after a # tag would be an an AJAX/JavaScript site such as Mint.com.

A quick examination of the homepage navigation structure menu of Mint.com produces the following URLs:

http://www.mint.com/#understand

http://www.mint.com/#accounts

http://www.mint.com/#budget

http://www.mint.com/#savings

http://www.mint.com/#protect

Search engines will not index any part of a URL that occurs after a hash (#) tag. This means that despite crawling these sections of the Mint.com site, these # URLs will not appear in search results.

The interesting point to observe is that a link to http://www.mint.com/#accounts with anchor text “Mint Accounts”, (IE. Mint Accounts), will pass anchor text value, but search engines like Google will only ever sent traffic to http://www.mint.com because any parts of the URL after a # tag are not indexed.

In time, this could lead to users not being sent to the ‘most appropriate’ section of AJAX/JavaScript sites, which is not the most desired outcome for a search engine.

Just food for thought!

If you’re asking yourself, “why would a search engine deliberately not index content after a # tag?”, my answer would be to help webmasters have more control over selecting the best content for visitors from search engines by deliberately excluding URLs that could provide a poor user experience. Sites that are driven by databases, for example, could have hundreds (or thousands, or hundreds of thousands) of URLs with similar product search results, which if all indexed would provide sub-optimal usability and could cause duplicate content problems.
